the concept of witchcraft can be defined in a variety of different ways. the practice dates back to prehistoric times and has been incorporated in religious and cultural practices in ancient egypt, greece, native america, and other world regions. the wiccan faith, founded in the early 20th century, celebrates the power of nature and astrological patterns. radical social activist groups have developed, using the concept of witchcraft to promote intersectionality, socialism, and equality in a white supremacist patriarchy. fighting fascism, rape culture, capitalism, and other systemic incarnations of injustice, feminist covens use their anonymity to fight the institutional greed of those in power.

in the past few years, witchcraft has captured increasing media attention in the pop culture world. from the "coven" season of american horror story to the latest episode of broad city, the concept of witchcraft has become an almost mainstream mode of feminism.

however, the way that witches are portrayed in some areas of mainstream media convey an inaccurate caricature of outdated hollywood stereotypes that represent witchcraft/wicca as evil or threatening devil worship practices. in actuality, the wiccan faith is a spiritual alliance with nature and all living creatures. while some individuals may practice witchcraft in conjunction with maliciously intentended rituals and curses, i perceive witchcraft to be a celebration of the inherent power of the feminine. to me, witchcraft symbolizes a form of rebellion from traditional capitalist models that promote conformity and obedience of a truly flawed and toxic patriarchal system.

there are so many complexities of witchcraft that i want to explore in this blog, including magick (which exists in my life as practicing manifestation and the law of attraction), herbal remedies (in place of a capitalist-driven pharmaceutical industry), and the place of witchcraft in an anti-fascist revolution. i want this post to exist just as an introduction to lots of future articles exploring the intersections between feminism and witchcraft.

please comment below if you identify yourself as a bad ass witch and want to join me in fighting injustice in all forms!!
